It gives details of over , Royal Navy and Merchant Seamen records which are searchable by name, rank, age and ship. The full crew list can be displayed for any of the ships. Covering the years , these include lists and agreements for those involved in merchant shipping and ship crews for those at home ports, sea and abroad. I did find one Bryan O'Connor in the Irish sensus in Queenstown (Cobh) and his occupation is listed as Pensioner Navy. We were always told that Bryan O'Connor was lost and died at sea some time between and but we don't know where we could find records of that. Enumerators' schedules of returns made by heads of households for the census, which include the names, age, sex, occupation and parish and county of birth of individual members of the population of England, Wales and the Channel Islands; included in this series are returns from ships of the Royal Navy at sea and in ports abroad.
The census of requires special mention. The returns were filed as above, but in addition there is a separate index of all names in the census which includes all named mariners, along with an index of vessel names available on microfiche.
The Royal Navy was separately enumerated and are similarly indexed but on separate fiche. This collection contains over 4 Million records for those living in Scotland on Sunday 31 March These records are comprised of Enumeration forms that were distributed to all households before the census night and the complete forms were collected the next day by the enumerators.
